The story behind the making of Come From Away is almost as compelling as the musical itself. Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein traveled to the town of Gander, Newfoundland and spoke to dozens and dozens of residents about their experiences following the events of 9/11. Come From Away tells the story of these residents and the thousands of passengers aboard the 38 planes that were rerouted to Gander on 9/11.
That the writers were able to condense these many thousands of stories into a moving 90 minute tapestry is a feat of impeccable storytelling. In the video below, listen to Sankoff and Hein tell how they took on such a massive undertaking. Come From Away is nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
